JOHNSON CITY – Dr. Ken Olive, interim dean of East Tennessee State University’s James H. Quillen College of Medicine, is the 2013 recipient of the Laureate Award, the highest honor given by the Tennessee Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP).
The Tennessee Chapter of the ACP selects only one recipient for this distinction each year. The award, presented at the ACP Scientific Meeting, is reserved for members who demonstrate, by their example and conduct, a commitment to excellence in medical care, education or research, as well as commitment to the ACP and their state chapter through service to the community.
In choosing Olive as its 2013 Laureate, the ACP cited his long service to the organization and his contributions to medical education, adding that Olive “will continue to be a role model for a committed internal medicine physician.”
Olive, a professor of medicine, has accepted an array of responsibilities in academia while continuing to practice medicine. When Dr. Philip C. Bagnell retired as dean in July, Olive transitioned from his post as associate dean for Academic Affairs to lead the college. While serving as interim dean, he continues to see patients.
Other positions Olive has held at ETSU include interim chair and vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and chair of the Medical Institutional Review Board. When ETSU appoints a new dean, Olive will return to leading Academic Affairs at the College of Medicine.
For ACP, Olive has been a council member for 13 years, as well as the governor of the Tennessee chapter for the past four years. He has achieved fellowship status with the ACP and has been an active participant and supporter of ACP’s educational activities and national political positions.
The ACP is the national organization for internists, or physicians who specialize in medical care for adults. With 137,000 members who are internists, internal medicine subspecialists, medical students, residents and fellows, it is the largest medical specialty organization and second-largest physician group in the United States.
