Statement from Senator Menendez Following Republican Block of Aponte Nomination

Washington, DC – Today, Republicans in the Senate blocked the confirmation of Mari Carmen Aponte, President Obama’s nominee as U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador, who had already served as ambassador following a recess appointment. In Response, Senator Robert Menendez issued the following statement:

“The Republican-waged war against Ambassador Aponte shows that the GOP will not let a stellar record of service get in the way of their political ambition to oppose President Obama at every step of the way – they blocked this nomination not because of substance, but because of politics.

“Ms. Aponte, who was born in Puerto Rico, has a great story and, more importantly, proven credentials – she has already served as ambassador following a recess appointment. She has been a stalwart for American democratic values and American businesses in a strategically important region, and is highly regarded within the Latino community.

“But Republicans, led by Senator DeMint, have mounted an all-out assault on a distinguished U.S. ambassador just because she was appointment by President Obama. Republicans have not only shown that they’re ready and willing to weaken our standing as a nation for the sake of politics, but also that they’ll yield control of the GOP the Tea Party before supporting the Latino community and President Obama’s priorities.”
